University of Utah Passport Block

The Passport Block listed here is for general information only. Students must see the institution's website for access to its official block.

PASSPORT BLOCK OVERVIEW

General Education (GE) meets three kinds of learning outcomes. First, GE helps students develop core competencies in critical thinking, quantitative literacy, visual fluency, and written and oral communication. Second, these courses help students confront and understand significant issues pertaining to the world and human nature and learn to explore those issues through a breadth of perspectives. Finally, in addressing core competencies and significant issues through knowledge discovery, application and dissemination, GE prepares students to become creative and collaborative problem solvers and to have an impact on their communities. As part of the University of Utah’s implementation of Utah Code R470, the University endorses a set of Learning Outcomes which describes what the university expects, in a broad sense, students to achieve through completing the general education program. Oversight The approval of General Education and Bachelor Degree Requirement designations for courses is done by the General Education Curriculum Committee (GECC), which is run by the Office of General Education. The GECC reviews each designation on all courses every five years. The addition of new designations to courses is also approved by the Undergraduate Council. General Education Requirements: American Institutions, Lower Division Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, Fine Arts,  Humanities, Physical/Life Science, Applied Science, and Social/Behavioral Science.

ORAL COMMUNICATION
